DEBRA EHRHARDT ( LONG BLACK, JAMAICAN MANE)
Actress/Author Debra knows “Jamaica Farewell” is more than a song. She risked her life escaping her home in Jamaica during a violent revolution.
BRENDA ADELMAN (FEISTY RED HEAD)
Actress/Author Brenda has her own definition of the F word: Forgiveness. She tells the real-life story of her mother shot and killed by her father, then her father quickly taking a new bride, her aunt.
MARIANA WILLIAMS (BLEACHED BLOND)
Author/Producer, Mariana is vain and thrifty. But budget plastic surgery? This hilarious true tale is told with candor, giving a shocking look into one doctor’s suburban home/clinic. (Yes, she went through with it.)

STORYTELLING TIPS
HMMMM, WHAT SHOULD I TELL ABOUT. I'VE HAD AN INTERESTING LIFE.....HMMM
AN OMG MOMENT... A WTF....A FLASH OF SENTIMENTALITY... A NEW AWARENESS...MAKE US SWOON...CRINGE...BLISS US OUT...JOLT US IN OUR SEATS... A BURST OF HILARITY...AN-UNLADY-LIKE SNORT...
MAKE US RECOIL...TEAR UP, LUMP MY THROAT... PACE THE IMPORTANT WORDS... S-L-O-W-L-Y
ALL OF US ARE STORYTELLERS---I'VE NOTICED A FEW POINTERS THAT MIGHT MAKE US A TAD MORE FASCINATING
Some Do's
1. Have a strong opening sentence explaining your time and place, roughly your age at the time if it's relevant
2. Once we get the setting, introduce conflict
3. Now is the time to express all the emotions. Confusion, dire consequences in choosing the wrong solution. Happiness, nausea… whatever. This can be funny or embarrassing to hear. Fine. You are building tension.
4. Solution-doesn't have to be dramatic, but it has to be clear. I've seen good tellers fail at this point.
Be clear on how it was resolved, then flavor it with your spin.
5. Resolution-Your attitude about the situation comes into play here. With confidence, deliver a prepared, strong get-off sentence.

KEEPIN' IT REAL SIX-MINUTES AT A TIME.....
Roughly, use your time like this. One minute setting up real world. One minute describing horrible problem. Two or three minutes worrying about solution…. lead the audience on your emotional ride. You are building a wall you have to figure out how to climb over. You are lost. You are trapped. You are scared. You are in the spotlight. You are deliriously happy. You are waiting for the test results....
Some Don'ts
1. Don't be tempted to make your story ending drawn out, just because people are attentive.
2. Don't be afraid to exaggerate. Make your language vivid. It wasn't a hot day--it was a scorching day.
You weren't worried, you were frantic...etc.
3. Don't over-explain details. Get right to the meat of the story. Just like in reading a book, you might turn a page to get passed the slow part; don't have your audience glaze over when you go off on a tangent--stay on topic and don't drone on about needless details.
4. Don't worry. Most people are terrified to speak in public. You are doing it! Jerry Seinfield said, "Public speaking is supposedly people's worst fear. So, that means when you are at a funeral and there's a guy standing up there speaking about it---the dead guy in the ground is thinking, 'I may be dead, but at least I'm not THAT guy.' "

June 10, 14, I told, "Daddy's Last Ride" at the Moth in N.Y. It's held at Housing Works Library in the village. Two years ago I met Jia Jong, who won on that night. I loved her story and introduced myself and we've become great pals ever since. (Oh, I missed winning by one tenth of a point. It's on youTube.)
Kelli and Robbin help out at the storytelling workshop--filming the storytellers.
If you, or someone you know is a songwriter that has been in recovery for at least a year...we generally focus on high school and college students who are songwriters. This has been a thrill for us to help these talented musicians every year with a $5,000 award.
We'll listen to song submissions for the 2017 Sunrise of the Spirit Award.
